Rob Webber of Stoneham never dreamed one day his world would be turned upside down nor about Resource Partnership helping make things right again.
“I was a very active, independent young man,” says Rob. “Growing up I always pushed the envelope.” Starting at a young age Rob learned to work hard. “I excelled in carpentry, working as needed for friends in the trades. I loved to tinker with things and could fix just about anything on a car.”
Then everything changed. At age 17 Rob broke his neck in a diving accident, becoming paralyzed from the neck down.
“Once disabled,” says Rob, “my main challenge was and is my lack of hand/finger and arm use and strength. Once I realized I wanted to live, I could not imagine what I would, or could do for a living. Where I once was so independent, I now depended on so many people for so many things - many, many everyday living requirements.” Rob continues, “I needed a way to get around from place to place, other than my parents taking me everywhere. And I obviously needed some marketable skills: auto repair was a thing of the past.”
New doors, however, would soon open for Rob courtesy of Resource Partnership. Resource Partnership, a nonprofit organization, with offices located throughout Massachusetts, assists people with disabilities in securing employment opportunities in the competitive labor market.
“My Resource Partnership job counselor,” notes Rob, “directed me to job fairs, and began to shop me around to her company contacts. At this time, I felt I was on the right trackand was certain job success would follow.”
Rob was becoming independent in its fullest meaning. Always looking to improve his career goals, Rob would return to Resource Partnership to improve his job search and career-building skills. “During each job search Resource Partnership brought important aspects to me such as stick-to-itiveness - just continually plugging away and utilizing company contacts. If you're not active in the market you'll get nowhere. It was just a question of time before I was successful.”
Today Rob is employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts as a Budget Analyst.
To those who may ask, Rob would say this about Resource Partnership: “Resource Partnership's business model is the correct one, as evidenced by their competition adopting it. But over and above that is the dedication that each Resource Partnership counselor brings to each individual. I believe that if you work hard and follow your counselor's suggestions, you will be successful.”
