This month I am going to discuss two myths about Social Security’s reporting requirements.
Myth #1: Since I am paying Social Security taxes, they must know that I am working.
Fact: It could be upwards of two years before Social Security discovers that you are working and then they will only know how much you are earning per year not per month, which is the information they require. Therefore, it is very important that you notify Social Security as soon as you begin working and keep them informed of how much you are earning to ensure that your record with them is both accurate and up-to-date. By the same token, you should constantly monitor your earnings so you always know where you stand with Social Security.
Myth #2: I can simply call Social Security’s 1-800 number to report my earnings.
Fact: Although using Social Security’s 1-800 number is very helpful for a variety of different subject matters concerning your benefits, our experience has shown that it is not the best way to report your earnings. We recommend two other methods of reporting your earnings to Social Security, as follows.
The first recommended method is to bring your pay stubs to your local Social Security office in person. Remember to always ask for a receipt and keep that receipt in a safe place in the event you need it in the future.
The second recommended method is to mail your pay stubs to your Claims Representative at your local Social Security office. Before mailing, make a copy of your pay stubs and any other correspondence you include with them, such as a letter or note. It is also suggested that you send your mail Certified Mail Return Receipt Requested. Remember that Social Security will only accept original pay stubs and not copies.
If you follow these simple reporting and communication guidelines you should be able to keep your Social Security record up-to-date and stay aware of how your earnings are affecting your benefit checks.
