Five Common Myths about Networking – Tips from TJX Companies, Inc.

The Staffing Department at The TJX Companies, Inc.

1) I need to belong to costly professional organizations to network.

You can network within your circle of friends, family, neighbors, former coworkers, religious organizations, social groups, high school & college alumni groups, even with your hair dresser!

2) I’ve submitted my resume to over 50 companies, now that’s networking.

Jobs go to the most aggressive job-seekers, but networking is more than passing out resumes. You need to be pro-active and call potential employers to inquire about your candidacy, seek informational interviews, and make contacts within the companies you are pursuing.

3) I feel shy and socially inept; I can’t be a good networker .

The internet has opened up a whole new world of opportunities to job seekers. What better way to make a good first impression than with a well written email introduction.

4) Holidays and the summer are worst times to network.

Parties increase during the summer; there are more picnics, BBQ’s, beach parties and sporting events. Think of the extended family you’ll see during the holidays, these are perhaps the best times to make contacts.

5) I only need to network when I need a job.

Actually, you should never stop networking. Building relationships takes time and is most effective when you start long before you need a favor!
