The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers a wide range of services and information online at www.socialsecurity.gov. At the SSA web site, you can calculate your full retirement age, estimate how much you will receive at retirement, and apply for your retirement online. You can also request a replacement Medicare card, check if you are eligible to receive special help from Social Security for your Medicare D prescription drug plan, and find the nearest Social Security office. You can also find out if you may be qualified to receive SSI or SSDI benefits, apply for them, if you find that you are qualified, and calculate the approximate benefit using online calculators.
In addition to obtaining important information, you can also update or modify existing information. To do that, you need to request an online password, by filling out and submitting an online application. Once you have the password, you will be able to change your address or telephone number, set up direct deposit, request a proof of income letter (used for housing) and request a benefits statement. You will also be able to check your benefit information online and, in the not too distant future, report your monthly earnings to Social Security.
Social Security also has online services for employers that include reporting of employee wages and verifying Social Security numbers.
